The World lost a Legend Today
Bobby Bailey was the designer of the Bailey-Moyes Dragonfly, an airplane designed for towing hang gliders. Bobby also worked on the Buccaneer and Connie amphibious airplanes, as well as the Tempest glider. Bobby played a revolutionary part in the hang gliding world, and he played a major role in bringing the sport to the masses.
In this video, I sit down with Bobby for his final interview. He will be missed

    I owned an Aero Adventure Aventura and it WAS CRAP! Alex, who owns Aero Adventure is (in my opinion) the worst possible person in industry. My feeling for this sub-standard person aside, getting parts was nearly impossible and if I did get a shipment, it was almost always the wrong part! Just crap company and not a well-built aircraft. The design is great (by same designer of Searey) but the quality is like as a Quicksilver ultralight or worse. Wobbly, thin & cheap, poorly adapted for quick build times in sacrifice for quality. Truly, Kerry at Progressive makes the finest sea plane on earth and why would you pay for this piece of crap supported by the (in my opinion) the biggest dirtbag in aviation? BUYER BEWARE! I now part own a Searey and I could not be happier. The difference between aircraft is incredible.

    Electric motors are superior to gas engines in every single way. People like to hate but this is a small step in the right direction. Eventually, batteries will catch up or hydrogen fuel cell (which uses hydrogen for storage and electric motor for propulsion) will advance enough to take over gas.

    About perfect planes they 100% do exsit by your defnation... You just need to be in the US milltary to fly one... and even then of the hudreds of US milltary aircraft I would say 30% are perfect... How ever unlike cars I don' think chipped paint and bent metal matters for a plane's perfection that just shows it's been used... Like look at any NASA Space shuttle's Orbiter that was used in space and came back dozens of times and cost millions to upkeep... they still have black reetrry scars... So if NASA the 0% risk tollernce org is willing to leave those what not just paint chips and dents?

    There's nothing wrong with many of the experimental aircraft if they were built well and not heavily modified from the original design. Here's the thing about experimental aircraft. If the company that offers the kit does NOT offer transition flight training or you can not find a flight instructor that will help you, many insurance companies will not insure you. You can always got with avemco insurance but they charge 2 1/2 - 3x what everyone else charges. Fortunately RV Company does offer trains but go check out what one cost yeah even his little beloved RV-12, it's ALOT! My advice is find an airplane that needs to be recovered . Like a tripacor or taylorcraft. Find an old aircraft to restore. If you don't have the skills to do that, you shouldn't be working on your own airplane at all. Those older airplanes were built-in a cottage industry.Something you could do in your garage or basement, and there is an avalanche of information & videos that show you how to do it. then most A&P will allow you to work on your own plane, they'll check your work make sure it's right and SAFE. Saving you hundreds or even thousands, building your skills, confidence and independence. Used parts are great, too, because airplanes are not built under planned obsolescence. I've got a '56 tri-pacer insurance is 950 bucks a year for a million in medical bills, full hull insurance for 40k and liability too. I've got a like new plane now for about $15,000. Way less than an RV-12.

    Humble Opinions that could really spark it up: 1 - Lycoming Engine. No good. Why? Expensive on the fuel. Heavy, and maintenance costs are high. Get a Diesel Engine burning JA1 or automotive diesel. 2 - Get a FADEC - no more prop blue handles. 3 - Make it FIKI. 4 - Garmin 3000. 5 - Air Conditioning. Now days it is a must have. Rather than that, the airplane is very sexy, and I am sure it is a great performer.

    This is the best advice i can give to people who are looking into flying and getting licensed. Or just can't afford to fly. Starting to get licensed: get your medical exam first. Make sure you are even healthy enough to fly. do online ground school first. You are allowed to take all of your written exams before you ever do orals exams and check flights. By doing written exams first, you get it out of the way and do all written exams while its fresh in your mind. Then its over and you wont have to do it again. Go to local meet-ups and events. Network with people. Look for someone who is building an experimental aircraft. Ask them if you could help. Watch how they build their aircraft. See the process. They will appreciate your help and enthusiasm. When the time comes, they may even offer to help you build yours. Making sure it is done right and safely. It will also cut a lot of costs from doing a builders assistance program. While you are doing that and helping, you should be doing microsoft flight simulator. You can get a gaming computer for cheap and the program is 5 dollars. It will help you learn the basics and start to form good habits. Now, even experimental crafts can be expensive, but there is a company called KITFOX they make good planes and are cheap. 50k. Less than a new car. They arent fast but can take off and land within 150 to 175 ft. (I will explain why that is important in a second.) With a stall speed of 37 mph. 1800 FPM. Very easy to learn to fly and very agile. They also have a lot of high end options available if you want the newest tech. It also has a lot of aftermarket options for down the road and many engine options. Even adding modern garmin tech, you will still be far cheaper than a vans kit. 30k + cheaper. Now the short landing and takeoff. I bring that up because a lot of people have complained about the lack of hanger space or the over all cost of storing your plane in a hanger. Well i have a solution for you. Look up registered airports in rural areas. Like farming communities. You would be surprised to see that some farms actually have their land as a registered airport. A lot of farmers from the boomer era used to have personal planes and registered their farm as a personal runway. Contact some of those farmers to see if you can work out a deal to store your plane there and fly out and land there. This would cut down on hanger costs and help out farmers looking to make a little extra money. I know it isnt a cool hanger and you arent around other pilots, but this is about cutting costs while you put in your hours. By doing these things you 1. Cut costs drastically on earning your license. After all, earning a commercial license can cost as much as a 86k. That just gets you licensed. A "piece of paper" at least with the plane you can sell it and recoup your money. You can fly whenever you want. You only have to pay for the hourly rate of an instructor. Your insurance rate will drop faster with every certificate and flight time. And you can actually make a profit selling your complete kit plane. Potentially offsetting the costs all together in instructor time, inspection flights, insurance, plane maintenance and inspections. You could actually end up earning your license for free when all is said and done. I have seen the new kits go for 130k to 180k finished. So if you really want to fly and want to earn your commercial license and dont want to spend 100k just going to school but want to own a plane and earn your license quick, this is the beat way to do it. If you already have a license. i highly recommend the KITFOX kit as an option for cheap. Its basically a bush plane. Fun to fly! And recommend talking to farmers as a possible storage option.

    One of the best lessons I've learned over my time of being an engineer is, "meets regulation" is oftentimes not synonymous with "safe". Meets regulation is the requirement to stay in business. Having strong safety requirements beyond that is how you keep people safe and achieve excellence in what you do. That combined with "just because you can doesn't mean you should" makes me really nervous about this.... loophole for "gliders".

  • @ac583
    @ac583 21 день тому

    This is an airplane loved by everybody except actual pilots. You're paying a lot of money to go in a straight line. Boring as hell. An airplane sold to dentists based on "ramp appeal." The idea that you are getting anywhere "cost effectively" in this aircraft is a joke. The cost of fuel is a very marginal item compared to maintenance, acquisition cost, insurance, etc. Yes, if you live in nowheresville USA and routinely are faced with a 300-400 mile drive in VMC or near-VMC conditions (note the utter lack of anti/de-icing), then this can be a better option. But that's it. The video says it all - competes with Cirrus', which are also airplanes for non pilots. "Easily gets out of a spin" is such bullshit too. The only place this plane will get into a spin is an unrecovable base-final stall/spin due to bad piloting technique. To call this an "IFR travelling machine" when it can't handle any known icing is a joke. This is something that the dentist thinks will get his wife to give him a blowjob. It won't.
